Put a new twist on basic burgers by using ground turkey rather than ground beef. Top with turkey bacon, cheddar cheese, mushrooms and onions. Serve with tortilla chips,
Turkey Burgers with Bacon, Cheddar, Mushroom and Onion Topping
Burgers:
1 1/2 pounds ground turkey
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Bacon and Cheese Topping:
6 slices turkey bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup thinly sliced button mushrooms, well cleaned
2 green onions, finely chopped (including green tops)
1/4 cup light mayonnaise
6 hamburger buns, lightly toasted
Preheat grill or broiler for medium, direct heat.
In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, onion, garlic and pepper. Mix gently, but well. Shape into 6 patties.
In a small bowl, combine bacon, cheese, mushrooms, green onion and mayonnaise. Mix well.
Grill or broil burgers 4 to 6 inches from heat for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once. Cook until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
During the last several minutes of cooking, spoon 1/4 cup cheese topping on top each burger. Continue cooking until cheese is melted.
Serve on toasted hamburger buns. Serve with tortilla chips.
